WORKING IN MARKETING
Working as a Marketing Manager
Marketing managers are focused on predicting and driving demand for the products / services their organisation offers. The skill of a marketing manager is to be able to identify potential new markets for their organization's products and once entered into that new market, to be able to come out with a profitable amount of revenue. Whilst marketing managers develop pricing strategies to help the organization maximize profits and market share, they also need to ensure that their customers are satisfied.Â
Marketing managers tend to work with a team of marketing professionals such as sales and marketing directors, sales managers and product managers. For example, a marketing manager can monitor trends that indicate the need for a new product or service, and then oversee the development of that product and service.Â
A marketing manager, for example, will create interest from potential buyers for a product or service and plans programs to ramp up this customer interest. This is initially done by working with advertising agencies that create advertising campaigns for customers. Next, they will collaborate with media companies that sell advertising space and advertising time, in order to ensure they have the right coverage on their target market. They will then work with the sales representatives to ensure that they are sending the right message to customers when pitching the product.
Marketing managers will be expected to have knowledge across a wide range of media including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, television and digital media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. They will usually work with the creative services department to ensure that the right message is delivered when displaying their media across these channels.
Sometimes a marketing manager will work with a promotion manager who will run programs that combine advertising with buying as an incentive to boost sales. These programs are often used to appeal to customers, and purchase incentives can take the form of discounts, promotions, or other forms of marketing such as discounts on products or services.
How to become an Marketing Manager
To become a marketing manager, it is usually expected that you have a bachelor's degree and managers usually have at least two years of experience in marketing, marketing management or sales. A bachelor's degree in marketing, advertising, media, english or journalism is usually preferred by employers. A job as a marketing manager at a large advertising agency or media company requires a bachelor, master or doctorate in marketing. In addition, internships after school can be useful, and a degree in computer science, marketing management or business administration is increasingly seen as an advantage.Â
Since maximising traffic is crucial for digital advertising and promotion, a computer science course is essential to develop the skills needed to maximise online traffic through the use of online search results and to be advantageous in the field of digital marketing, such as social media marketing.
Advertising, promotion and marketing managers typically have a wide range of tasks within their respective companies. Many of these managers are, for example, purchasing agents, marketing directors, product managers and even sales managers.
Marketing managers need to be able to communicate effectively with a broader team of other executives and employees throughout the entire advertising, promotion and marketing process. They need to be able to analyze industry trends to identify the best marketing strategies for their company's products and services. These managers must also be able to communicate convincingly to the public, they must be aware not only of the marketing strategy, but also of its impact on the company.
They often deal with a number of people in different roles within the organization and decide on competing advertising and marketing strategies for each employee. They must lead a team of employees, guide and motivate their employees, and be able to develop new and imaginative ideas.
